The project entailed the construction and upgrade of the R61 (16km) between the Majola Tea turnoff to Tombo near Port St Johns. Due to the mountainous topography, extensive mass earthworks (1 400 000m3) and mechanically stabilized earth walls (4600m2) was required to accommodate the widened carriageway. The Employer provided the dolerite quarry and all aggregate was crushed (320 000 tons) on site. The project further included the construction of four concrete culverts and the relocation of nine houses.
