The project entailed the construction of a new dual carriageway of the R61 from Mthatha to the R61/Ngqeleni intersection. The existing road was widened to accommodate the new East bound carriageway.
The new carriageway required the construction of several new bridges namely;
- Mthatha River Bridge
- Corana River Bridge
- Ngqeleni Interchange Bridge
- Sidwadweni River Bridge
- Ngqeleni Pedestrian Bridge
- Two agricultural underpasses
Due to the ribbon type development of houses adjacent to the existing road, the widening of the existing road reserve necessitated the relocation of houses. This entailed the construction of 30 new houses and the demolishing of the existing houses.
