This R1.063 billion project, executed between August 2020 and November 2023, involved the reconstruction of a single carriageway on the N2 Section 19 along with significant safety upgrades. Works included temporary roads to maintain traffic flow, realignment of the highway, community access roads, relocation of municipal services, and improvements at Dan’s place.
Geotechnical challenges required extensive rock-fill foundations to counteract high seepage conditions. The project delivered two new road bridges, one pedestrian bridge, nine cattle creeps, five culverts, four retaining walls, and associated infrastructure such as street lighting, sidewalks, underpasses, and bulk piping. Major quantities included 434,000m³ of soft fill, 93,151m³ of rock fill, 44,076 tons of asphalt, and 780 tons of reinforcing steel. These upgrades significantly enhanced the serviceability, safety, and resilience of a critical national transport corridor in the Eastern Cape.
