The George WTW Upgrade is a design-and-build project (FIDIC Yellow Book) focused on the expansion and rehabilitation of the 33-year-old facility, which supplies the bulk of potable water to the city of George. Scheduled from October 2022 to October 2025 and valued at R198 million, the contract is being executed by the H&I Construction / Hlumisa Engineering Services JV.
The scope is divided into two key sections: the first introduces a new dewatering facility to manage residual sludge, including novel floating decanting units, decanting centrifuges, and associated pumping systems. The second expands potable water production capacity by 20 ML/day, upgrading inlet works, pumping stations, and treatment modules while integrating advanced chemical dosing, SCADA, and electrical upgrades. This ensures long-term water security and improved operational efficiency for the growing municipality.
