his R497.9 million project, executed between May 2019 and January 2022, formed part of the rehabilitation and widening of the route between Ashton, Cogmanskloof, and Montagu. Three existing river bridges were replaced, including the landmark B2666 Arch Bridge over the Cogmans River in Ashton. The B2666 is a 113m single-span tied arch bridge with arches rising 22m above deck level.

Constructed initially in a temporary downstream position, the bridge was later launched transversely into its final alignment — a first-of-its-kind engineering feat in South Africa. The project required 4,311m³ of concrete, 505 tons of reinforcing steel, and post-tensioning systems, with the B2666 structure itself valued at R81.9 million. Beyond the signature bridge, the rehabilitation of 13.4km of roadway through Cogmanskloof has improved safety, connectivity, and long-term resilience of this vital transport link.
